The \u2018Villa Amonita<\/strong>\u2019 project<\/a>, situated on the volcanic island of Lanzarote (Spain) and designed by Czech architects OOOOX<\/strong><\/a>, has won the APE Grupo Architecture Awards<\/strong>. Now in their second edition, these awards celebrate architectural excellence and the innovative use of ceramics.<\/p>\n

For this year\u2019s edition, the jury was chaired by architect Francisco Mangado, recipient of the Gold Medal for Fine Arts and a member of the French Academy of Architecture. He was joined by renowned interior designer Francesc Rif\u00e9 and Susana Babiloni, president of the Castell\u00f3n College of Architects. A total of 47 projects from across the globe were submitted, highlighting the competition\u2019s international prominence.<\/p>\n

Jury’s evaluation<\/h2>\n

During their deliberation, the jury commended \u2018Villa Amonita Lanzarote\u2019<\/strong> for its balance \u2018between the island\u2019s natural, dramatic volcanic landscape and the smooth, white surfaces of the materials, particularly the ceramics used.\u2019 “A contrast that is maintained not only in the exterior tiles<\/a> but also in the interior tiles<\/a>,” remarked the jury\u2019s report.<\/p>\n

\u2018The architects have created a beautiful and captivating dialogue between nature and construction. Also, between context and artifice, where the new elements blend seamlessly,\u2019 the deliberation added. The \u2018elegant yet simple use of colours and materials\u2019 also earned high praise. \u2018In essence, the project suggests just how alluring and delicate life on the island of Lanzarote can be,\u2019 concluded the jury\u2019s evaluation.<\/p>\n

The jury highlighted the versatility and richness of ceramics by awarding an honourable mention<\/strong> to \u2018Restaurante Caruso\u2019<\/strong> in Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic), designed by the local architecture studio Arquimilio<\/strong>. Also, the jury commended \u2018the freshness of the intervention and the intention to create a distinctive language, resulting in a design that is both intense and undeniably striking.\u2019 They emphasised \u2018the successful creation of a space where one can genuinely enjoy spending time.<\/p>\n

\u2019\u2018Beneath the bold references to imagery and elements from the local and popular traditions of the Caribbean, a subtle approach emerges, revealing a distinctive and uninhibited style for crafting interior spaces,\u2019 the jury noted. In this context, they added that \u2018the scenographic and mannerist intensity, along with the reinterpretation of \u201cthe popular<\/em>\u201d introduced by the designers, is particularly captivating.\u2019<\/p>\n
